THE CHAMPAGNE SANDWICH

I opened the bedroom door softly when I got back, just to see if he needed anything, and found that he had fallen asleep. It's strange, I thought, how different people look when they're asleep; Mr. Dickens looked so confident, so sophisticated, when he was awake, but now, lying there in his pyjamas with his hair all rumpled, he looked like a small boy. I closed the door quietly, and went into the kitchen to make him some soup for lunch.

By Sunday evening he was definitely better. So much better, in fact, that when I took him in some sandwiches he asked me for a drink to go with them.

"Do you think you should? You've still got a bit of a temperature."

"Of course I should — especially if it's champagne. There's probably a bottle in the 'frig — go and have a look, there's a good girl. And bring two glasses."

I sat on the end of his bed, holding out the glasses as he eased the cork from the bottle. It came out with a satisfactory pop.

"Quick — gimme a glass." The golden liquid bubbled out; I wasn't quite quick enough with a glass, and some splashed over the sandwiches.

"I'll cut some more," I suggested.

"Why bother. Let's pretend we've invented a new dish — champagne sandwiches." He picked up one of the soggy triangles and bit into it with apparent relish, while I took the bottle and filled up the glasses.

"Here's to your rapid recovery."

Mr. Dickens leant back against his pillows and studied me, glass in hand.

"I'm not so sure if I want to recover rapidly — it's really rather nice being looked after."

I laughed. "But you are looked after — all the time."

"I don't mean just waited on — I mean really looked after. Cosseted. Here, have some more champagne." He refilled my glass.

"If I have any more, I won't be fit to wash up."

"Oh, leave it — the servants'll be back tomorrow."

"But I wouldn't like them to find the place in a mess."

"Stop being so conscientious. I feel like a game of backgammon — can you play backgammon?"

"Only sort-of."

"Well, fetch the board and we'll have a sort-of game, after I've put this down." And he started tucking into his supper. All at once he stopped eating. "What about you? Have you had anything to eat?"

"I'll get something later."

"No, you won't — you'll have some now." He watched authoritatively as I fetched a second tray from the kitchen. Suddenly it struck me, also, that it was nice to be looked after.

Me eché a reír.

—Solo a medias.

In questo sasso, e perchè dorme ha vita;

Non veder, non sentir m'è gran ventura,

¡Habla bajo!)
