Cupid Untying the Zone of Venus, hoy en el Hermitage, es una versión de un cuadro anterior de Reynolds, Nymph and Child, encargada por su original propietario, Lord Carysfort, para el príncipe Potiomkin. La diferencia entre ambos es la ausencia de una serpiente escondida junto al brazo de Venus, lo que ha hecho que también se conozca a la primera de estas pinturas como The Snake in the Grass (Tate Gallery).

La Venus del cuadro tiene un gran parecido con Emma Hart, Lady Hamilton (nacida Amy Lyon, hija de un herrero de Cheshire), a la que Reynolds pintó en dos ocasiones: Wood Nymph and Faun y Lady Hamilton as Bacchante. La retrataron más artistas, en especial George Romney.
